Frigiliana
Frigiliana is reputed to be the finest “white village” in Andalucia, indeed it is
the holder of several awards testifying to this. Situated just six kilometres from
Nerja in the foothills of the Almijara mountain range, it has a totally
different feel about it from its bigger neighbour. Frigiliana's altitude not only gives
wonderful views of the sea and the countryside but makes the very air you
breathe refreshing.
This is why Frigiliana has become a very popular town for holiday apartments and villas for rent and property sales
over the years. View our latest
holiday apartments and villas for rent.
The village has a long and interesting history evident the moment you set foot in
the old “barrio”. The church at the heart of the barrio was for several
centuries a mosque. Now it faces a delightfully tranquil square where one can
partake of refreshments and listen to one of the most unusual peal of church
bells in the region.
Like so many old Andalucian villages Frigiliana is all steps and narrow roads.
This, whilst taxing is actually very rewarding for round each corner or through each
archway is another charming sight or interesting curiosity.
The events of the most significant historical events in Frigilianas history are told
on ceramic plaques located on street corners. The plaques tell the story of the
rebellion in Frigiliana by the Moriscos against the Christian rulers of the area.
The battle of Frigiliana which ended the struggle was particularly violent.
The Moriscos of the village and the countryside around Frigiliana fought to the
death against a professional army led by the governor of the garrison at Nerja.
The final act of the battle was staged by the surviving Morisco women who threw
themselves to their deaths from the rocky heights above the village rather than
be taken into captivity.
Little wonder therefore that such an event has never been forgotten and perhaps
contributed to the real difference between the villagers of Frigiliana and the
citizens of Nerja. Frigiliana is essentially a people and place in the Andalucian
countryside a real difference from the coastal living experience.
Property in this delightful place comes in different forms too. There are two old
houses and apartments often having been rebuilt many times over the centuries.
These are as fascinating and curious to own as the quaint streets upon which they
stand.
There are newly built apartments. Frigiliana has been extending and rebuilding for
several years, putting new, sympathetically designed dwellings in and around the
older buildings. These modern, high quality homes offer the best of both worlds.
The charm of Frigiliana living with the advantages of modern houses. From little
one bedroom apartments to substantial three and four bedroom townhouses, these
offer excellent value for money and in many cases less expensive then coastal
properties.
Lastly there are the country houses in the area surrounding Frigiliana.
Theses come in all shapes and sizes. The least costly are small two bedroom houses
often with a largish land holding and a private swimming pool at the other end of
the scale are large, many roomed villas with lovely gardens, guest cottages, large
swimming pools and tremendous views to the sea and to the mountains.
